After a little geocaching along the Gowanus Canal Avi Avital returned to Red Hook Bait and Tackle with the Geocachers crew to perform Bach’s Cello Suite no. 1: Prelude on mandola. Ever heard Bach played in a noisy bar? No? You, sir, have not lived.
We’ve got a new episode of Geocachers up now.
Grammy-winning mandolinist Avi Avital meets up with Sam at Red Hook Bait & Tackle to go geocaching along the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn in this episode of Geocachers. With little difficulty they find the cache in a murky area along the kind of disgusting canal (that is also a superfund site). Avi talks about the history and future of the mandolin, and some guy photo-bombs the log with his shirt off.
Our friends over at Geocachers interview one of our favorite mandolinists: Avi Avital.

We’re happy to feature artist Leah Yerpe in this new installment of Live at LPR. Leah Yerpe will be showing her work in The Gallery at LPR from March 7-June 6, 2013 for an exhibition titled “STELLIFY.” Yerpe’s drawings and large-scale works have a mythical quality to them, figures suspended in space both literal and figurative. As she says in her artist statement “Stellify means to change or be changed into a star,” these are “humans transformed into constellations.”
This installation, which will last from March 7th to June 6th, is, like all exhibitions in The Gallery at LPR, presented to an array of art and music fans in the ever-changing space. These engaging works interact with viewers in an atypical space that seeks to present the highest caliber of art in a less traditional format that most galleries. These works will be experienced concurrently by art aficionados who come for the art, as well as patrons arriving at The Gallery at LPR for parties, readings, comedy, concerts, and more through the exhibitions run. The mission of The Gallery at LPR, to “serve art and alcohol” and promote atistic dialog, thus echoing a return to the days of the Salon, is alive and well.
We’ve got a new Live at LPR video up today.
Buster Keaton is always the best. Always.

BookStalker Turns Two! And This Week’s Readings
It’s been a great year in bookstalking, and I think the best part has been adding BookStalked, a feature in which authors and other big names in the NYC book scene discuss their most memorable literary moments. I wanted to share just a few of my fave moments (though I truly love them all!).
- Jami Attenberg (The Middlesteins) on the dude who just wouldn’t stop talking about his coma.
- Myla Goldberg (The False Friend) on her reading that caused audience members to leave the room.
- Amanda Bullock (Housing Works Bookstore) on dealing with in-store urination.
- Matt Dojny (The Festival of Earthly Delights) on the event where a Clifford the Big Red Dog stole the show.
- Corey Eastwood (Book Thug Nation) on the Estonian performance group who took a chainsaw AND lighter to a giant book shrine.
- Teddy Wayne (The Love Song of Johnny Valentine) on causing some awkwardness in his friend’s mother’s book club.
- Chloe Caldwell (Legs Get Led Astray) on events where exes showed up “drunk and high and crying.”
- Mira Ptacin (formerly of Freerange Nonfiction) sharing her reflections on the NYC lit life after announcing her move to the Salt Institute in Portland, ME.
- Darin Strauss (Half a Life) on passing out at a Julian Barnes reading.
- Carmela Ciuraru (Nom de Plume) on meeting her (and my) literary hero.
Be sure to catch up on any BookStalked features you missed! Also, check out another top-ten countdown from last year’s B-Day.

Congrats!
Geocachers comes back into Manhattan for a different kind of adventure. First comedian and author Dave Hill takes Sam shopping at Hamlet’s Vintage Clothing in Greenwich Village. Sam gets a make-over alá Dave Hill. It’s scarf-y. Then Sam meets up with the brother and sister co-hosts of the political podcast Radio Dispatch, John and Molly Knefel. The trio geocache Washington Square Park with some squirrels and a boatload of muggles.

I’ve got a new poem up about the movie “Speed” (from a series about the movie) at Pismire Poetry.
